Chapter 1
~
Jason Blake
"Brett, don't." I whispered to my bestfriend as her reached for the doorknob. The moment of enthusiasm filled me with ecstasy and guilt. Brett didn't know what was hidden behind that door. The thin piece of wood that separates my dimension and theirs. Only mum has a blue about our sacred powers.
"Why? We need to find out what caused your Nanna's death! They didn't provide any of us with valid alibis." He watched me as the contours of his face deepened correspondingly when the shadow darkened.
"Brett, watch out!" I shoved him away abruptly when the phantom manouevered his non-existent hands around Brett's bodice.
"What has gotten into you?"
"Nothing. There was just a hairy spider hanging from a web." Brett shook his head when I skidded along the corridor and tripped over a pencil sharperner. I fumbled through my haversack for a crystal ball that promised to ward off evil spirits. I handed over the crystal ball to Brett but he reluctantly touched it and flinched at the chilled item in his palms. He looked bleak after the firm push.
"What's this for?" He looked like a dunce boy who just failed a test.
"Just take it." I debated with my instinct on whether to tell him or not. My arms shivered with adrenaline and my arm hair rose in sequence.
"I have something to tell you."
"No way. This can't be true. I know your family's not mine, but no way can magic be real. Or can it?" I nodded my head persistently and shifted sides on the bed. I swear he seemed delighted when I clarified about the power that was in our veins.
"Cool! This is definitely going on my Twitter." I tugged at his sleeve and lifted my gaze to his face. "This cannot go to anyone, okay? I made a vow to my Yurei that nobody should ever know." He lifted my chin and watched my tired eyes. We stood there for a long time.
"Okay, I understand."
"So since this is out, no more secrets, okay?" Having known Brett for 3 years already, I trusted him enough to keep anything from anyone. According to my interpretation, he is the brotherly, loving type of guy. He flicked his eyes awkwardly and bit his lip.
"Then there's something you need to know." He murmured. I sighed and muttered weakly, "What's it again now?"
He took my hand in his and kissed my forehead. I hestitated but hugged him stiffly. He pulled away and said, "Now we really need to rush."
"What is this?" He carried the bottle of orange liquid and placed it under my nose. It smelled citric, sour and of rat.
"It's a potion Nanna drinks to prevent all her magic from getting drained out. Come on, let's bring it to the lab." We carried along 2 more potions of different colors and headed to the lab.
After preparing everything, we poured a bit of the orange liquid and spread it on the transparent plate. The stench of rotten carrot juice filled the air that hung around us. Examining the molecules, I rotated the plate and rested my elbows on the counter. "What are those green dots?" he asked. I changed the angle and looked tentatively at Brett. He gasped and exclaimed, "I think I know what cause Nanna's death."
There was only one person we knew that sold green heroin:
